2023 TOP IDAHO COMPANY #79: PURDY ENTERPRISES

Celebrating 50 years, this Boise company has roots from 1972 when Nick Purdy started Silver Creek Irrigation in Picabo. (Your family fisherman knows where that is.) During its first 27 years, it grew into one of the largest irrigation suppliers in the state. In 1999, portions of Silver Creek Irrigation were sold, and Purdy Enterprises was formed to operate the remaining businesses. At that time, there were fewer than ten employees.

Today, there are over 180 employees with three facilities in Boise, one in Picabo, and one in Columbia, South Carolina. And it ships products across the U.S.

Purdy Enterprises is a longtime Idaho company that has doubled in size and scope over the past four years, with a major emphasis on pumping systems and control panels.

The company has three diverse businesses in Idaho that serve the local economy and beyond.

Precision Pumping Systems is the largest of the three. It manufactures advanced packaged pumping systems and control systems used in landscape irrigation, golf irrigation, municipal water, water treatment, and oil and gas extraction.

These systems are shipped all over the United States.

Precision Automation Systems is a wholesale supplier of electric motors, variable frequency drives, custom control panels and other motor control components for various industries, including food processing, irrigation,  and manufacturing.

Ranchers Supply, Ace Hardware is a retail farm and ranch supply business in Picabo, its hometown.

“We have more than doubled in size since 2019 due to a strong economy in Idaho, but more importantly from our expanded national reach,” said CFO Pat Purdy. More than 70 percent of its products leave the state of Idaho.

“Before the Great Recession, nearly 100 percent of our business base was in Idaho,” Purdy said. “That difficult time taught us that we needed to expand our focus and our product offering and become a company that had a regional focus. That strategy was very successful and allowed us to grow rapidly during the mid-2010s.

“The next obvious step was to expand to a truly national focus, so we added some key people to our team in sales, marketing, engineering and operations. Since we have made the investment in growing our team, our sales have more than doubled,” he said. “What has not changed is our hands-on, family-oriented approach to business. We regularly remind ourselves to never become ‘corporate’ in our approach to our employees or our customers.”

Of course, a conversation can still turn to the subject of water these days.

“Our core business is moving water as efficiently as possible,” Purdy said. “The Clarity Water Management System allows our customers to control their pumping systems from the palm of their hand. Our customers can monitor the operation of their system, make changes as necessary and identify problems without having to send someone onsite.”

Also, during the past three years, the company has developed its flagship products – a complete family of standardized pumping systems that cuts into lead times while also offering highly cost-competitive, high-quality systems.

Yes, there are workforce issues. Yes, there are supply issues. But there are also more markets to be conquered. These guys are not going away.

“Our family roots in Idaho go back to 1883 when our great-great-grandparents filed on land around Picabo and later platted the town,” Purdy said. “I think our deep connection to the state and the people of Idaho help us attract great talent and to connect to the customers that need our products and services.’
